Better Health From Real Good Food

NomNom

A Healthy Dog Is A Happy Dog, And A Happy Pet Parent

They're your best friend. Your "pick me up" when you're feeling down. Your "get up and go" even if you're more inclined to just sleep in or skip that after work walk.

Many studies have been done about the benefits of owning pets. From longer life expectancy, to a healthier lifestyle, and better mental health. As a pet owner it probably comes as no surprise that dogs are the most common household pet and registered emotional support animals. Their ability to learn and communicate makes a canine companion perfect for all kinds of situations. It's estimated that over 76 million dogs have pet parents in the USA.

But while we take our own dietary needs seriously, endeavoring to create balanced meals and take vitamins and minerals, are we taking our dog's health and diet seriously enough? Just as each person has different dietary needs based on lifestyle, allergies, age and genetics, a dog's dietary needs also vary.

With the vast amount of dog food brands on the market, how do you discern which provides high-quality dog food? Are raw foods and human grade food good for them? And if you've got a picky eater on your hands, how do you figure out which dog food they'll actually eat?

Homemade dog food sounds like a good solution, but if you're like us, you don't have the time or knowledge to make a healthy, balanced, fresh meal every day.

Fresh dog food, from a dog food delivery service, may just be the perfect solution.

Is Dog Food Good For Your Dog?

Kibble, or dried dog food, has become the most common type of food for dogs. Being dried out it's easier to store (as well as ship) and is less expensive because it can be mass produced. It's also uniform, meaning each piece contains the same nutritional value. But is it really good for your dog?

Prior to the mid 1800's, most household dogs lived mainly outside and consumed table scraps and raw meat. Then, around 1860, processed dog treats were developed and marketed as a healthier option for dogs. It was through aggressive marketing the treats became popular and became a standard in dog nutrition. In the 1920's wet food was canned and sold in stores for dogs. Its convenience is what made it so popular. And in the mid-1950's dried dog food was developed and quickly outsold wet dog food as it was a more affordable dog food (due to the high cost of tin and meat during and after WWII).

Regardless of affordability or marketing, dried dog food only contains about 5-10% moisture, due to the high temperatures they're cooked at. It also contains a higher percentage of high-carbohydrate ingredients and a lower composition of nutrients. It's the high carb intake that can lead to weight gain in pets. Pet owners also report that dogs who only consume dry food tend to have more food allergies and more regular visits to the vet for health issues.

Moisture is actually really important for digestion. The stomach has to convert that dry food into something soft to be easily digested. To do this the stomach uses moisture from other parts of the body. When food is already wet it requires less energy and resources (from other parts of the body) to digest. It also provides the body with a source of water/moisture. It's one of the reasons dogs who only consume dry kibble drink a lot of water.

Both cats and dogs, ancestrally, are carnivorous animals. Their diets were made of raw animal life which naturally contained moisture, 60-75% moisture. This allowed them to maintain a healthy weight and have more energy.

As dogs and cats have come to be seen as more of a member of the family than just a pet, many pet owners have taken a closer look at what their pets are ingesting. This caused a shift to include canned dog food in their pet's diet, which reintroduced more moisture into the dog's diet.

In more recent years more pet parents have shifted away from processed food altogether, opting for raw dog food, to more closely resemble a dog's diet in the wild. Fresh meals with real food that properly address a dog's nutritional needs are becoming a standard.

Finding fresh dog food can be difficult as most pet supply stores still tend to focus on traditional dog food. Some people have opted to try to make raw food at home, however, this can present challenges in creating consistent food that meets a dog's health needs.

How much food should I feed my dog?

We'll help you determine how much food to give your dog based on their age, breed, current and ideal weight, and their level of activity. Your dog's meals are then customized and prepackaged in the right servings to ensure they are eating a healthy amount of food with each meal.

Are Nom Nom meals raw?

All Nom Nom meals are slow cooked to remove any potential harmful bacteria from the food, and make them safe to ship. Slow cooking also ensures the nutrients from each ingredient remain in the food.

Where are the meals made?

Nom Nom has two kitchens. One is Nashiville, Tennessee, the other in the San Francisco Bay Area.

How do I store my dog's food?

Nom Nom meals are fresh food and should be stored in the fridge (for use the same day) or in the freezer. Because the packages are properly sealed and contain human grade dog food, they are safe to store in your fridge with your people's food.

Does Nom Nom  make prescription meals?

Nom Nom currently only offers 4 different types of meals. Based on your dog's information the team can consult their veterinary nutrition team to see if one of the meals will work for your dog. However, if your dog has specific dietary or medical needs based on a veterinarian's diagnosis, it's best to talk with your veterinarian before switching to Nom Nom dog food.
